The brief
An Owl® screen had previously been installed with a Sony Dolby-ProLogic surround system and a Sony projector. The Sony projector had seen better days and a discrete multi-channel system was needed. The screen was already connected to a lowering switch. Two extra speaker positions were required in order to provide 7.2 audio, with two subwoofers placed either side of the room. The speakers could not be obtrusive and needed to blend with the room’s decoration. An existing shelving rack was remaining and the equipment was to be placed on it.
The solution
The Sony projector was tested and deemed unusable. A replacement by Infocus was specified. The screen was in excellent condition and the lowering mechanism was working well. The Sony speakers were replaced with an M&K set, adding two more to the side walls.
The centre speaker had originally been placed behind the screen reducing its clarity substantially yet remaining highly visible when the screen was raised. The new M&K speaker was attached sideways in front of the screen, blending with the screens casing.
The equipment
A Rotel 1066 7.2 processor was specified to reliably create a superb 7.2 cinema sound from an Arcam DV78. A Rotel 1048 8 channel power amplifier drove three M&K K17s, two K5s and two K4s. Two M&K K10 subwoofers were installed in the rear corners for a good amount of ‘kick’.
Finally a new Infocus Screenplay 5700 DLP projector was installed to replace the Sony unit and provide an 11ft wide image.
In addition to the core cinema equipment a DVD recorder and Sky+ box were also fitted. New cabling was run using the old cable as draw wire to allow all 7 speakers to be cabled through the loft space above.
